Mickey Rourke talks Sin City 2

Comic book fans the world over will have found their ears pricking at the news that Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller are planning to include the story Just Another Saturday Night in the long-awaited sequel to Sin City.

Involving three of the key players from the first film in the form of Hartigan (Bruce Willis), Nancy (Jessica Alba) and Marv (Mickey Rourke), it would be a popular choice, provided the original talent could be persuaded to return.

Just Another Saturday Night follows Marv's movements on the same night that Nancy and Hartigan are reunited, providing a storyline that runs in tandem with the events of the first movie's final third. Mickey Rourke is aware of proceedings and recently spoke to Comingsoon.net about the chances of a return for big Marv.

“It depends,” laughed the Wrestler star. “It depends on how bad they want me, you feel me? I did [like the character], but I'm claustrophobic, so the hours of makeup… you have to keep it on for about 13 or 14 hours a day. It's latex and glue and that stuff gets my eyes all red.”

It also got in the way of the star’s social life last time around. “I remember I picked up some chick at a bar in Texas one night and invited her to the set to have lunch at the lunch break," says Rourke. "I couldn't take the shit off. Fuck it, I never saw her again.”

That said, the character is at least one that Rourke would be interested in revisiting, which is more than can be said for Whiplash, the villain he played in Iron Man 2.

“I try to find the moments where [the villain is] not that cliched, evil bad guy," he explains. "I had it on Iron Man and they won. It was going to work for Marvel and them breaking [Jon] Favreau's balls and wanting just a one-dimensional villain. The performance and all the things that I tried to bring to it ended up on the fucking floor."

Word of warning then Mr. Rodriguez. If you do persuade Mickey Rourke to don the latex for a second time, make sure he gets lots of nice, juicy characterisation to play with. And the odd lunch break out of character might help as well…

First official images of Frankenweenie posted online

What do you do if you're a Tim Burton character and your dog dies? You reanimate it, of course - and the first official images of Victor Frankenstein doing just that to his pet Sparky have appeared online.  Burton told Entertainment Weekly, which published the images of the stop-motion animation Frankenweenie, that the film is about the enduring story of a child and his first pet.  “It just tries to keep that idea of a very, simple pure relationship. Mix that with the Frankenstein myth and it causes problems,” he said.   “It has its good side and repercussions,” Burton added. “Ultimately, we try to go with the slightly more positive aspects of keeping that relationship going.”   Burton lost his job at Disney for making a live-action short of the same material in 1984. However, that film helped open doors for his career as a director.  “I don’t know, they got freaked out or something, but they still allowed me to make the film. Even though I was frustrated about the release - or not release of it - it was still a great experience, and did a lot for me, so I couldn’t really complain,” Burton said.  Frankenweenie opens 5 October 2012.

Will Ferrell talks political comedy Southern Rivals

We recently sat down with legendary Anchorman mirth merchant Will Ferrell, to chat about his career so far.

Talk lead to his upcoming political comedy, Southern Rivals, which will see him and Hangover breakout star Zach Galifianakis playing competing presidential candidates.

When we asked Ferrell about the intriguing project, he was more than happy to spill the beans, telling us:

“It’s basically the story of a small time congressional district in North Carolina, in the south, and I’m the incumbent candidate who’s about to run unopposed for my fifth term.

“There’s even mention of me being considered as a candidate for Vice President and that’s as high as my aspirations go. I just want to be Vice President and I have a wife who wants to be the Second Lady.

“We’re politically hungry, and I’m cruising along until I leave what I think is a message on my mistress’ voicemail but it’s really just a random family and it blows up in my face. I’m seen as vulnerable for the first time and the opposition decides to run a candidate against me and that’s Zach’s [Galifianakis] character.

“But you know, the movie is just a platform for us to illustrate how insane our political process has become. The crazy ad campaigns that exist now and the manipulations. We’re going to make it pretty farcical but not really that far from the truth.”

Ferrell is of course renowned for his spot-on take-off of George W Bush; will his Southern Rivals character be based on a real figure? “No, no, just kind of based on all the politicians nowadays and how no one really talks about any issues, just pays lip service to a bunch of things.”

Southern Rivals
is expected to open in August 2012.

'Spectral' from Legendary Pictures Sounds Like a Gritty 'Ghostbusters'

Gritty Ghostbusters

Since there's a decent chance we fans may never see a third Ghostbusters get off the ground, maybe it's time for a new team of paranormal professionals who are up to the task of capturing ghosts in New York City. Heat Vision has word on Spectral, an all-new project from Legendary Pictures and up and coming writer Ian Fried which is described as a darker, more dramatic and gritty version of Ghostbusters with a story that follows a special ops group whose sole purpose is to take down evil ghosts who have taken over Manhattan. However, that might hit too close to Columbia Pictures' property as location and details might change. ...

Jennifer Lopez Producing ‘Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?’ Movie

jennier lopez where world carmen sandiego movie adaptation

Carmen Sandiego, the globe-trotting red-clad master thief who “put the ‘mis’ in misdemeanor,”  looks to be finally making the jump to the big screen. Walden Media has acquired the screen rights to a live-action film adaptation of the Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? brand name, which will be produced by musician/actress Jennifer Lopez.

Walden is reportedly also developing the project as a starring vehicle for Miss Lopez – though, for the time being, she is attached to only produce, not headline, the flick.

Deadline says the Carmen Sandiego movie is being designed as “‘National Treasure’ meets ‘The Thomas Crown Affair’” – as is additionally indicated by the project’s logline:

When the ACME agency’s greatest detective Carmen Sandiego becomes the world’s greatest thief, it’s up to her former partner to follow her clues and ...

Star of Lost joins The Hobbit Cast

class="post_image_link" href="http://the-hobbit-movie.com/2011/08/23/star-of-lost-joins-the-hobbit-cast/" title="Permanent link to Star of Lost joins The Hobbit Cast">class="post_image alignleft remove_bottom_margin frame" src="http://cdn.the-hobbit-movie.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Lilly.jpg" width="430" height="258" alt="Star of Lost joins The Hobbit Cast" />

Lost star Evangeline Lilly is the latest celebrity to join the cast of The Hobbit. The 31-year-old actress, who played Kate Austen in Lost, was in New Zealand to play Woodland Elf, Tauriel, as Peter Jackson announced on his Facebook page. He said, “Her name means ‘daughter of Mirkwood’ and, beyond that, we must leave you guessing!”. Sadly there will be no romantic connection to Legolas. Read his full letter below:

Yikes! I can finally get back to some postings! We’ve finished our first block of shooting and moved straight into location scouting. More on that soon… But today, I’m thrilled to announce two new cast members who will be joining us for our second block of shooting.

Evangeline Lilly will be playing a new character‚the Woodland Elf, Tauriel. Her name means ‘daughter of Mirkwood’ and, beyond that, we must leave you guessing! (No, there is no romantic connection to Legolas.) What is not a secret is how talented and compelling an actress Evangeline is; we are thrilled and excited she will be the one to bring our first true Sylvan Elf to life.

I’m also highly excited that Barry Humphries will be portraying the Goblin King, in much the way Andy Serkis created Gollum. Barry is perhaps best known for his business and social connections as the long-time manager of Dame Edna Everage. He has also been an ardent supporter of the rather misunderstood and unfairly maligned Australian politician, Sir Les Patterson. However, in his spare time, Barry is also a fine actor, and we’re looking forward to seeing him invest the Goblin King with the delicate sensitivity and emotional depth this character deserves.

Evangeline and Barry, along with Welsh actor Luke Evans as Bard and Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug, just about rounds out the major casting. I cannot wait to get stuck into these new scenes!

More soon, including a flurry of answers to your questions. Sorry for the delay!

Cheers, Peter J.

With "The Zone," 2011 AFI Fest Honoree Joe Swanberg Wises Up: "I Want People to Like Me."

A lot of people are skeptical about Joe Swanberg, especially Joe Swanberg. Thirty years old and Chicago based, he's the only filmmaker to gain serious mileage from the vaguely defined "mumblecore" movement. And he's the first to realize that making extremely similar microbudget movies about sex, filmmaking and uncertain twentysomethings has turned him into a walking cliché. "I'm still trying to have that broader conversation with an audience that doesn't ...
