World exclusive image of Tom Hardy as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises

[brightcove]1615831662001[/brightcove]

The Dark Knight Rises is, hands down, the most anticipated film of the year. So it's fitting that the film's incendiary anarchist should help kick off our very own revolution...

What better way to launch the brand new interactive iPad edition of Total Film magazine than with an exclusive look at Tom Hardy’s monstrous villain, Bane.

The close-up image offers an unparalleled look at his freaky facewear. Part Hannibal Lector mask, part Predator mandible and wholly unlike the lycra luchador look he sported in the comic, it's destined to make the character an instant icon.

And those eyes… there’s something deeply unsettling about the manic stare Hardy’s locked in here, hinting a level of feral intensity not yet revealed in the trailers. Pray you're not caught in that line of sight...

[Click on the Bane image to see it in hi-res]

On the mask, Hardy told us: “It’s not as bad as you might think. You just put it on. Work out where you drool goes. That’s it. Mask work is good fun. This one wasn’t painful; there was the stunt mask and there was the up-close on for the sexy glam shots.”

And he also shared some startling insight into the unforgiving regime he stuck to when we asked: what was required to attain the Bane bulk? “Eating entire villages of chickens.

“When I started I was about 160-something pounds. When I was done I was 190. You lift weights. You eat. You lift some more weights. You don’t run anywhere because if you do cardio, you drop weight. So it’s really good for heart attacks!”

There’s much more from Hardy, his fellow Dark Knight Rises castmembers and director Christopher Nolan – as well as more exclusive shots - in the new issue of Total Film magazine, and the brand new interactive iPad edition.

And, in celebration of this launch, you can get the brand new interactive issue of Total Film on your iPad for the special price of £1.99 for a limited period of two weeks (regular price £3.99), so there’s no better excuse to try it out.

On top of our full Dark Knight Rises coverage, Issue 194 also features our unique look at Batman: Past, Present And Future. Our Caped Crusader celebration takes in his 73-year history, and includes unseen behind-the-scenes shots from Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.

First trailer for the Ferrell and Galifianakis political comedy The Campaign

With politics firmly on the minds of US citizens this year, The Campaign is presumably aiming for some box office heat in light of the national debate on just about everything.

But don’t expect an incisive highbrow satire – if the trailer’s anything to go by, it looks like a more violent Step Brothers than In The Loop 2.

Watch the trailer for The Campaign now:

With Ferrell doing his patented smarm-and-charm offensive, and Galifianakis wheeling out a mildly camp oddball, they’re not a million miles away from some off-screen politicos, although we're betting none of them ever punched a baby...

The Campaign is directed by Jay Roach, and opens on 28 September 2012.

New cast and filming details for Richard Ayoade's The Double

The Double, Richard Ayoade's adaptation of the novel by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, has released a host of new information, including shooting details and confirmation of several new supporting players.

Submarine
duo Yasmin Paige and Noah Taylor have both been added to the ensemble, which stars Jesse Eisenberg and Mia Wasikowska in the leading roles, with James Fox and Wallace Shawn also set to appear.

Eisenberg wlll play Simon, an insignificant man whose world is turned upside down by the sudden appearance of James, his exact physical doppelganger, who takes a job at Simon's firm.

Confident, charismatic and good with women, James might look like Simon, but that's about as far as the similarities go. Understandably perturbed by the situation, it isn't long before Simon begins to feel that James is taking over his life…

No release date has been confirmed for the film as yet, but with filming beginning in just a couple of weeks time (20 May, to be precise), it looks as though we won't have to wait too long to see this one on the big screen.

First official look at Scarlett Johansson in Under The Skin

Sexy Beast director Jonathan Glazer hasn’t released a feature since 2004’s Birth. But with his latest movie now in post-production, he’s hoping to get Under the Skin of viewers once more...

Above is our first official look at Scarlett Johansson, who stars as a man-eating alien disguised as a beautiful woman - a role that will give Natasha Henstridge a run for her money as cinema’s most desirable space invader.

"OK, yes I do play an alien who is wearing my own skin. But it's actually not a science-fiction film; it's sort of a film that asks existential questions and much more complex than the logline," said Johansson in a recent interview.

Sounds like Species by way of Sartre.

Emily Blunt talks Looper and superheroes

Emily Blunt talks about her varied upcoming roster of projects in the brand new issue of Total Film (out now in magazine and brand spanking new interactive iPad edition forms).

British actress Blunt will next be seen in romcom The Five-Year Engagement, indie three-hander Your Sister's Sister and lo-fi sci-fi Looper.

As she makes genre-hopping look like such as a casual pastime, we had to ask her: does she have a genre preference?

“No, I don’t have a preference at all – I never have done. The only thing I haven’t done is hang from a building, which I’d quite like to do at some point. Or some wire work – something more actiony.”

It's not like she hasn't been close to that though. She didn’t turn down Black Widow role in Iron Man 2; to that she responded simply “the timing of it was an issue”.

On playing a superhero, she said:

“I would want to fly. No, scrap that – I wouldn’t want to fly because I’m not great with heights. How about breathe under water – I love to scuba dive. What could she be called?”

Aquawoman?

“Isn’t there an Aquaman?”

Sure – she’s his long lost sister.

“Maybe Fishgirl.”

Or maybe a mermaid-type thing instead?

“A mermaid! Yes!”

The remake of Splash?

“Yes! Oh please write it. I’d love to do that.”

And on Rian Johnson's Looper, which co-stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis, she told us excitedly:

“It was fucking awesome and I’m unfathomably lucky to be in it.

“I play Sarah, a girl from the Midwest, Kansas, and I live on a farm and I have a son and she’s fierce and protective and tough and I wield a big gun.

"It’s so awesome, so exciting – it looks like an old Spielberg movie. I really think it’s the coolest movie I’ve ever been a part of.”

The Five-Year Engagement opens on 22 June 2012, followed by Your Sister's Sister on 29 June, and Looper on 28 September.

Matthew McConaughey talks Lincoln Lawyer 2

Matthew McConaughey is the loquacious and candid subject of this month's Total Film Interview, which you can read in the brand new issue (out now in magazine and brilliant new interactive iPad edition formats).

He chats at length about the ups and downs of his career, and gives an update on the status of the sequel to his biggest hit in recent years, The Lincoln Lawyer.

Here's an extract from the interview:

A lot of people felt you lost your way. Did you see The Lincoln Lawyer as a comeback?

“It didn’t feel like a big return or revolution. I mean, I understand how it could have been perceived as that, and that movie got well reviewed.

"Wouldn’t you think that the sequel would be getting written right now for me to do the next one? [The character, Mickey Haller, appears in four novels]. I’m like, “Hurry up, everybody!” It is getting written right now but it should be on more of a fast track. Let’s get this on, man.”

Which book is it going to be based on?

“It’s actually a mix of two. I won’t reveal what those are, but it’s a mix of two. I got good reviews on The Lincoln Lawyer. There’s a lot of times that critics have written the review before they’ve seen the frickin’ movie. They’ve written the review on me before they’ve seen it – maybe the critic doesn’t like me.”

McConaughey will next be seen in Killer Joe, which opens on 29 June 2012.
